Matthew Arnold" - English Victorian poet, literary & social critic, noted especially for his classical attacks on the contemporary tastes & manners of the "BARBARIANS", the "PHILISTINES" & the "POPULACE". He became the apostle of "Culture" in such works as "Culture & Anarchy."
So the which we have to Discuss about is....GOOD POETRY AND CRITICISM....
Arnold a critic is a social benefactor. ... He claims that poetry is superior to philosophy, science, and religion. Religion attaches its emotion to supposed facts, and the supposed facts are failing it, but poetry attaches its emotion to ideas and ideas are infallible.
The Study of Poetry is one of the best works of Matthew Arnold and is considered one of the best in English literary criticism. He wrote this essay at a time when different critics were talking against literature. One of the major arguments against literature was that it has no direct contribution in the economy hence literature is unimportant and one should not take it seriously. Arnold also countered this argument by saying that very soon literature and poetry will take over philosophy and without literature science is incomplete.
Touchstone method helps readers to understand the difference between good and poor literary piece. In this method, a reader, in order to understand the quality of literary piece, should take up works of great writers which are considered to be masterpieces. Arnold's touchstone method is a comparative method of criticism. According to this method, the specimens of the very highest quality of poetry are compared to the specimen of the work of poetry under study and conclusions are drawn in favor or against the work. This method requires to keep in one's mind lines and expressions of the great masters, and to apply them as a touchstone to other poetical works. Even single line or selected quotations will serve the purpose. If the other work moves us in the same way these lines and expressions do, then it is really a great work, otherwise not.
