So the task is about to give the answers of 3 questions which are as under. So, let's introduced the summery or a brief of poem before move to the Questions.
SUMMERY OF THE POEM
The waste land is Divided the most famous and a central work of 20th Century. Most Important work of MODERNIST POETRY. Poem is Divided into 5 {Five} parts....which we are going to understand in brief.
The Burial of the dead,
A Game of chess,
The Fire Sermon,
Death by water,
What the thunder said.
So ,as we talk about the poem is not just a normal summaries poem... It have a vast collage to understand.. . As we try to understand deeply then the roots are deep with HUMAN CIVILIZATION. Some critics like I.A. Richard and Cleanthes Brooks are consider this poem as Christian poem but there's also a Buddhist and Upanishad concept as well... There's not a directly indicted there. Main theme of this poem Sexual perversion and spiritual degradation.
So the Questions are here...
1) What are your views on the following image after reading 'The Waste Land'? Do you think that Eliot is regressive as compared to Nietzsche's views? or Has Eliot achieved universality of thought by recalling mythos-historical answer to the contemporary malaise?
Nietzsche didn't believe in the existence of God. He already wrote in his famous work that GOD IS DEAD, he gave the idea of Ubermensch that's the Superman .According to Elliot's poem one can see that the poem is going backward to find the solution of current problems. Eliot turns towards mythology, Buddhism, Christianity and Hindu wisdom and philosophy.
In this matter I find Nietzsche’s concept of “Ubermensch” appropriate. As this concept talking about to have our own morality for the betterment of humanity and our self. The morality which generally accepted and not harmful for society. To have faith in our self make us more powerful to fight against the problems around us and to control our self. So as per my thinking it is better to find new solution rather than going back to the old ones as they will not work for contemporary time same as they didn’t work for old time. He also succeeds in achieving the timelessness and universality of the poem. After reading all the references of the poem, one can say that Eliot has tried to bring out spirituality from myths and religions.
2) Prior to the speech, Gustaf Hellström of the Swedish Academy made these remarks
What are your views regarding these comments? Is it true that giving free vent to the repressed 'primitive instinct' lead us to happy and satisfied life? or do you agree with Eliot's view that 'salvation of man lies in the preservation of the cultural tradition'?
Ans :- Sigmund Freud was knows as the founder of psychoanalysis, a study of human behavior, psyche and personality. He established many new observations on human behavior. According to my opinion Free vent to the repressed primitive instinct will automatically leads towards anarchy. We don't create disorganization in the community and world. Here in the epic poem I think Eliot has powerful ideas rather than Sigmund Freud. Another thing is that We all are lives our lives with specific perspective, with discipline and with moral rituals. Although life became more appropriate and enjoyable.
3) Write about allusions to the Indian thoughts in 'The Waste Land'. (Where, How and Why are the Indian thoughts referred?)
Ans:- There are three religious passes politically in The Waste Land .The Three are Buddhism, Christianity and Hinduism. Eliot has presented various cultures and languages to connect the world with one universal thought. In the first four part Eliot described that how sexual perversion has overpower than spirituality of human and solution of spiritual degradation by referring the Indian culture and Upnishada.
The allusion to the Indian thought Eliot mentioned in the last part of the poem:
"Ganga was sunken, and the limps leaves
waited for rain, while the black clouds
gathered far distant, over Himvant
The jungle crouched, humped in silence."
Then Eliot gives three 'Da'
1)Datta- to give not only charity but giving oneself for some noble cause.
2) Dayadhvam- Sympathies yourself with the sorrows and suffering of others, come out of your isolation and love into others.
3)Damyata- Self control, control over one's passion and desire
This poem completed with that words of 'Shantih'. Eliot used Shantih mantra in the context of peace of the world. Peace leads to us new creation and hope. So here question is that why Eliot used Indian references in The Waste land ? may be I think that Waste land is not another land but Eliot interpreted bad condition of his country. So that He preferred to Indian references. Another reason is spiritual ideas more powerful in Indian literature also.
